Hey Vie!
Here’s a major tip for anyone in the heartbreak hotel… if you’re really feeling the pain and need to get away for a few days, you MUST MUST MUST grab some girlfriends and take advantage of the Gansevoort Turks and Caicos “Girlfriends Getaway”.
Just went to this beautiful hotel in January and I cannot say enough good things about it- the ultimate experience in relaxation!! And the food is delicious!!! Hands down best key lime pie I’ve ever had.
Besos!

So you want to sit on the couch and watch crappy movies? Hey, I understand! Sometimes music just doesn’t do it. Alone or with the girls, here is your Thursday night brokenheart movie list. Tonight’s theme is “Think About You.” Meaning think about how awesome YOU are, woman! Who needs a man, right? Here goes:
Educating Rita: Ok, I have a crush on young Michael Caine, but the premise is wonderful. A bored wife going to school causes friction with her husband who can’t understand what she needs more learnin’ for. It’s more involved than that, but that’s about all I remember. Maybe I should rewatch it.
Working Girl: You get to see a feel good movie about a woman who improves herself in spite of many odds, and you can stare at Harrison Ford when the plot gets slow. Win win.
Blame It On Rio: Ok, Michael Caine again, but he bangs his friend’s daughter so it’s a good ‘get pissed at the disgusting perfidy of men’ movie. Satisfying when he creeps back to his wife at the end, ladies. Wink.
Casual Sex? Ok, so I also have a crush on Andrew Dice Clay, please judge me. But this is a cute harmless movie about the bad sexual decisions all women make, and you get to see ADC in a reindeer sweater. With a puppy. And you probably want to see a manly man humiliated right now.
Enjoy!
As your official Broken Hearted Moopiggy music source, I offer you this comforting ballad from the brilliant Paul & Artie. I prefer this live version, but thought that yall might appreciate seeing the lyrics so you can sing along.
Be an island! (An undiscovered tropical one, not like, SANDALS or one of the crappy Keys or anything.)
Ok Simon & Garfunkle might be a bit of a downer. Today’s UPBEAT “f you” music for all you Moinks Kicking Heartbreak! Don’t dwell! You aren’t gonna let them drag you down - you’re mooooo-vin on up!
Today’s moinker heartbreak song: Missin You by John Waite. Great shots of 1980’s NYC! Extra girly version here: a duet with John and Alison Krauss.
Hugparty Protips
1. Don’t think about him. Trust me: he’s not thinking about you!
2. Seriously? There’s just no excuse to not shower, ok?
3. No. Put away the Alanis. NO.
4. You’re right - you are alone, and I don’t understand. Next topic?
5. He didn’t like those strawberry candles for a reason. You’re not proving anything, and your house smells like a Mississippi brothel.
Today’s heartbreak Mooooosic: Marianne Faithfull “All I Want”. Now I’m not a huge fan of hers; most of her music sounds like the soundtrack for a self-cutter. But All I Want is kind of funky, so enjoy.
Dazzle with your Grace (& Chandelier Diamonds)

Vie,
This might sound a tad impossible in the face of such an emotional
crisis, but it works for me. It might not change your life overnight
but it is a significant step towards the light. When I had my heart
broken the first time (and a couple of times after that) initially I
couldn’t bring myself to tell anybody. I was 18 and didn’t want my
parents to know either. I was in such shock I couldn’t even cry. That
evening I had to attend a very important formal event. I went through
the usual motions of picking a dress, picking jewelery, doing my hair
and make-up etc. But the very act of trying to retain some normalcy
through this routine calmed me down a great deal. I didn’t want be a
curled-up ball at home, I wanted to be dazzling in my chandelier
diamond earrings and 5-inch heels. Even going to that event, meeting
people, having normal conversations kept me from just crumbling. Years
later when I read of women who suffer public heartbreaks stepping out
in style immediately after, and receiving admiration for it, I feel
like one of them. Nobody will write about my break-up or discuss my
composure on a talk show, but inwardly I know I’m being just as
graceful as they are, and that makes me proud. So it doesn’t need to
be a girls’ night of drunken revelry (though that works!) but just
somewhere that requires you to be composed and graceful and spend time
on what you wear and how you look. It is when we break
down…especially when we break down that we can find comfort in not
looking like it.

Create Yourself a Care Package
(submitted by Jo R.)
Dear Vie,
When I’m worried about something depressing—an impending rejection, career crisis, relationship turmoil—I indulge a secret cheesy habit and build myself an emergency care package. The things in it vary, but I always start with a note to my future, supine-on-the-couch self, reminding her that whatever she’s enduring is not insurmountable, and that she’ll recover. I butter her up with sweet, sincere compliments, and invite her to tuck into the box of goodies I’ve laid aside. I write like I’m talking to a little sister, but one whose judgment is skewed by hurt and sadness, and who would benefit from some level headed advice.
Though it’s great to do in advance, this works just as well if you’re already having a blue day (week, month…). Go somewhere quiet, breath slowly, and think about how, in a calmer mindset, you would take care of yourself. Friends are wonderful, but another person will never be as intimate with your situation—and who can resist a luxurious, epicurean care package? Some small measure of excitement and anticipation is inevitable.
Here are the kind of things I would put in mine:
- Zingerman’s Zzang Candy Bars (carried at Murray’s Cheese, and also on the Zingermans’s website)
- DVDs I’ve been meaning to watch, still in the plastic wrap
- Guilty pleasure novels I’ve been meaning to read (look for ones with a reputation for being uncannily absorbing, i.e. Twilight series or The Help)
- Chilled grapes or cherries
- Fresh magazines I don’t ordinarily subscribe to
- A new pair of knit cashmere socks
- Sake Bath (here from Sephora)
- L.A. Burdick Dark Hot Chocolate Mix (there’s a location in NYC, but you can also order from http://www.burdickchocolate.com)
- Ingredients for lemon madeleines (so easy it’s ridiculous—and marvelous with the hot chocolate)

HEAL YOUR HEART WITH (the most amazing) BROWNIES (via Julie Cook of The Daily Julie)
Hey Vie!
Breakups are rough stuff! But you know what is a therapeutic process with a sweet treat at the end? Baking! And the rewards are endless. Use the brownies to eat your feelings, pair with a bottle of wine for a suitable post-break up meal, or share with friends. The best way to make yourself smile is to make others smile because of you!
And so, for your consideration and to heal the hearts of millions, I present to you the most scrumptious brownie recipe evah! I used to make these all the time when I was young and my metabolism was high. I even had to dig through my old cookbooks to find it in print as I had submitted it to a local community cookbook that was used in a fundraiser many moons ago.
But enough rambling, on with the goodies:
Most Amazing Brownies That You Will Ever Taste/ Guaranteed to Help Heal a Broken Heart (or give ‘em to a new love interest to seal the deal)
Brownie Ingredients:
5 ounces of unsweetened chocolate
2/3 c. butter
5 eggs (yes, 5!)
2 1/2 c. sugar
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/4 c. all purpose flour
Directions:
Combine chocolate and butter in a medium saucepan, cooking over low heat until chocolate melts. Combine eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt in a separate bowl. Beat at medium speed until blended. Stir in flour and chocolate mixture. Pour batter into a lightly greased 9x13 inch pan and bake at 350 for 25 minutes. Spread with frosting while brownies are warm (frosting is below)
Frosting Ingredients (frosting is optional, but I’m a brownies-with-frosting kinda gal)
1/4 c. plus 2 Tbsp butter
1.5 oz of unsweetened chocolate
3 Tbsp. half and half
3 c. powder sugar
Directions:
Combine butter, chocolate and half and half in a medium saucepan, cooking over low heat until butter and chocolate melt. Remove from heat and mix in sugar in 1 cup increments.
Notes:
- If you buy the unsweetened chocolate that comes in squares in the baking aisle, 1 square = 1 ounces.
- Try mixing in goodies into your brownies. Tried and true favorites are pecans, shredded coconut, or even a smidge of coffee grounds. But you can go wild with bacon pieces, your favorite candy (but would not recommend anything gummy. snickers are okay), or exotic nuts.
And that’s all there is too it. Thanks, Vie! I pink puffy heart YFRF.
xo,
Julie
